Obituary for Martha Elizabeth (Betty) Holtzmuller

Martha Elizabeth (Betty) Elliott Holtzmuller, “A Life Well Lived” September 27, 1922- October 13, 2011; age 89, of Eaton, OH, passed away peacefully at Heartland of Eaton. A woman devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren, Betty will be remembered for the many facets of her life. She was an independent woman interested in politics, sports, literature and her community. Born in Columbus, Ohio she was raised in Marysville, the only child of the late Walter and Joy (Mills) Elliott. It was at Marysville High School where Betty developed and fostered her quick wit, civic mindedness and ability to get along with everyone. She was a National Merit Scholar, nationally known debater, president of many clubs and cheerleader. In 1940, she attended Miami University to study Business Administration. She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, loved to Jitterbug and developed a life long love of the game of golf. While at Miami she met and then married her husband of 54 years, James R. (Dick) Holtzmuller of Farmersville. Following World War II, Betty and Dick, along with her parents, established residence in Eaton, Ohio. Dick managed the Holtzmuller Ford Dealership for Dick’s father; Paul and Betty did the accounting. She would live the rest of her life in her beloved Eaton. Her son, Paul Elliott (Pete) was born in 1944 and her daughter Sara Elizabeth followed in 1958. Through two generations, Betty was known for the active leadership roles she undertook in the community. She volunteered and was a member of many organizations. She belonged to St. Paul United Methodist Church, was a charter member of the Eaton Country Club, spearheaded the fund drive for the Eaton Community Swimming Pool Association, and helped establish the Youth Activities Center and a leader in the Boy and Girl Scouts of America. Her lifelong love of literature led to her involvement in the Current Events Club, which helped establish the new library. Her favorite topics were history and politics. Betty was an avid bridge player. An accomplished golfer, she was proud of her club championships. Betty felt that to be an independent woman, one should have a career. When her husband pursued harness racing, Betty’s career took her to the Preble County Court house. First as a Girl’s Probation Officer for the Preble County Juvenile Court Followed by an appointment as the Director of the Preble County Board of Elections. Known as a great compromiser, she facilitated the election of bipartisan candidates. She implemented the computerization of the voting process. When her son Pete came with his family to establish his local law practice, Betty then went to work as his secretary. In retirement, she devoted herself to her children and grandchildren who provided endless hours of entertainment. No matter the activity or sport, Betty would be front and center cheering them, as well as their teammates, on. Betty will be remembered as a great friend, always willing to sit and chat over a cup of coffee. Her gentle smile and sparkling blue eyes will be missed. Hers was a life well lived. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James R Holtzmuller; son Paul E. “Pete” and daughter–in-law Betsey Holtzmuller.
