Obituary for Jane Eleanor Helmer

Jane Eleanor Baughman Helmer
Feb. 11, 1936 – Dec. 3, 2020

Jane Eleanor Baughman Helmer, age 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2020. She is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 56 years, Kelsey, and her twin sister, June, who passed away in 1937. She is survived by her daughters, Lee Anne Craft (husband Jerry), Karen Dzendzel (husband Doug) and Carol O’Hare (husband Tim), and also by her granddaughters Alison Crouch (husband Travis) and Dana Craft.

Born on Feb. 11, 1936 in Ingomar, Ohio, Jane was the eldest child of Clyde and Amy (Moses) Baughman. High school sweethearts, Jane and Kelsey were a devoted couple, building their family and providing a blessed and happy to childhood to their three daughters. Jane took great pride in raising her girls, providing them with love and support throughout her life. Their bond was often more like friendship, and they loved to go shopping and watch soap operas together. She felt very blessed to have two beautiful granddaughters whom she adored.

Jane loved the outdoors, nature and all animals. She had many dogs and cats as pets during her life and doted on them. She was quite artistic, and enjoyed painting, drawing and creating artwork in many forms. She was an excellent baker and made many delicious breads, cookies, cakes and pies for her family and friends to enjoy.  Another talent she possessed was singing. As a child, she sang with her mother and sister, Beverly, when they did the dishes after dinner. She also sang in a quartet in high school as well as in the choir at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Farmersville, Ohio.

Jane also loved fresh flowers and cultivated a beautiful flower garden at her home in West Alexandria, Ohio. Another passion was birds, and she had a large bird feeding sanctuary in her back yard and enjoyed watching them. Her knowledge of different bird types was impressive and she could identify them easily.

Jane bravely battled a crippling illness much of her life, which many people were not aware of, but she always lived her life with dignity and grace. She will be greatly missed, and we look forward to reuniting with her again in heaven one day.

By Jane’s request, visitation and graveside services are private for immediate family members. Those who would like to honor Jane’s memory are invited to make a contribution to the Humane Society of Preble County, an organization that she personally supported.
